Ghyle stood at the cave entrance listening for any approaching sounds. One glance at her face told him something was wrong.

“It is nothing.” She did not even give him the chance to ask. She took a deep shaking breath before continuing, “Delph has a very strong link.” Her tone was strangely mechanical with an obvious effort to control her emotions.

He caught sight of the Endemi emerging slowly from behind the partition. The prince stopped mid-stride as he looked toward the cave entrance and saw Vitora’s back. She seemed to feel his eyes on her and she shifted uncomfortably. Ghyle studied her for a moment and he wondered what had happened between them. He decided to let it go since it seemed obvious that she did not wish to discuss it at the time being.

She cleared her throat and forced herself to continue on. “I think he and I could provide a sufficient shield for you.” She hesitated. “But if I fail, we would be too close…” She let her voice fall away meaningfully.

Ghyle nodded, understanding her unspoken point. If she failed, then they would be incinerated in the resulting blast. “Delph,” he called, “can you lead us around and back to where Rayl and Dain found the weapons?”

The prince nodded, still staring somewhat sadly at Vitora. She had not turned to face him. “We could follow behind the ridge around to the other side. It should bring us out on the cliff overlooking the camp.”

“That would be perfect. You do realize this will be very dangerous.” Ghyle looked the Endemi in the eyes. “We will not survive if Vitora’s shield breaks.”

Delph glanced back at her, but she obviously refused to not meet his gaze. He looked again to the mystic. “Then, we’ll have to make certain that it holds.”

Ghyle smiled and clasped the prince on the shoulder for a moment before he strode over to where Dain, Rayl, and Chand were still trying to account for what they may have left behind in their latest hurried escape. “You men stay here. Delph is going to take Vitora and me back to those weapons.” He paused. “Don’t be surprised by what you may see or hear from the direction of the camp before we return.” He started to leave, but turned back. “Make yourselves as comfortable as you can; we may be gone for some time. If we’re not back by this time tomorrow, we won’t be coming back,” he said gravely, “and, you should make your best speed back to your homes. Try to keep as quiet and low as possible.”

He returned to Vitora and Delph, who were waiting in an uneasy silence, and gestured for the Endemi hunter to lead them on.
